Week 12: Concept execution

Week 12: Concept execution

Class work: making the ottomans

This week Lana and i worked to create the 9 ottoman's and couch structure for the work. We used a simple "glue and screw" method by creating a cube like structure from lengths of pine, gluing them and then screwing them together.  12mm ply wood was then screwed along the top face to create a functional seat. The process was leangthy taking 3 days to complete however the results were succesfull and true to the vision of the group.

We also experimented with the method of attaching grass to the ottomans. We found using a staple gun to secure it to be moderately succesful yet screwing it to the selected faces provided a better result.

Weeks 10 & 11: Concept refinement

Weeks: 10 & 1: Concept refinement.

Class work: Refining the concept.

Weeks 9 and ten were really the final refinement stages of the project, the group orgainised construction schedule's for me and lana to construct the final structures, we orgainised the purchasing and access of materials and the creation of grass heads, seed bombs and posters to advertise and go with the event. The group decided to include seed bombs as well as the grass heads with the final work in order to further reinforce the spontiaiety of the message that plants bring a joy that is unexpected to life. we decided on the final concept which the group worded to be

"This project is a comentary on the social relationship people have with nature and the    benefits of socio-horticulture and horticultural therapy. Plants have a strong positive presence in any environment we challenge you to make life a little greener by growing. "

The group decided to set a challenge to the audience on the cards attached to the seed bombs by writting by
exclaiming:
"Tonight we integrate nature into Foley street, tomorrow we challenge you to integrate plants into your life and your city."

The group wanted to include a way of making sure that the impact of the work would extend beyond the night itself this was achievable by setting this challenge to the audience and the issuing of grass heads and seed bags on the night. The group also worked in weeks 10 and 11 to prepare drawings for the final engineering report for the work in the space.

Week 9: Site visit

Week 9: Site visit

Class work: concept refinement.

Me and lana began the first week back from holidays by constructing a mock up ottoman in the workshop to bring to the site visit. We transported the ottoman to the site visit where we placed it in various positions around the space to see which area our work would be most appropriate for. We found a small ledge  in between two window like recess's that would be perfect in elevating the couch of the ground to truly make it a feature. The window spaces aded depth to the remaining of the sculpture and the aesthetic by adding to the living room concept in making it truly look like an inside out room. The group decided to remove the arms of the couch as this would envelop the space too much and overcrowd the area. We decided on the perfect area for the work and took some measurements as to where things would be placed in relation to the street surroundings. The mock up really helped in solidifying the concept and the design spatialy to truly fit and react to it;s surrounding environment.

Lucy and kate also developed a tumbler for the group as a public space to inform the public of our event and keep them updated with out projects process. Below are some printed out images of the tumbler page accesible at
